Hello! My name is Nancy Piers Ma.

I am the Community Education Coordinator

For the Deaf and Hearing Deaf Services in Grand Rapids, MI.

It is important to know about

active communication access.

Some may already know, but others do not.

Disability:

It is important to know your rights!

You may know about the United States Disability Act (ADA).

The ADA covers a wide range of areas,

but let's focus on communication rights

for the deaf, deaf, and Hard of Hearing communities.

People in these communities have different ways of communicating.

Each person decides which method of communication is best for them.

Who is needed to provide communication access?

MEDICAL ACTIVITIES:

All businesses are open to the public!

For example medical services, courts, and schools.

There is more to the list.

How does the business know how to communicate with customers?

The client must inform them.

The business will then call the agency to set up the services

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:

for effective communication.

The business needs to pay for the service, not the client.

Now let's focus on providing the right interpreter.

In the state of Michigan, there are strict translation laws.

The State requires translators to have a valid license

and recommendations for specific situations.

There are 4 types of permissions.

Legal approval is for cases involving courts, lawyers, and the police.

Health / Health Authorization for a doctor's visit, surgery, and counseling.

Approval of Education focuses on children in classrooms and school events.

BLIND TO THE DEAF:

Deaf Blind endorsement is intended for touch, tracking, and people with limited views.

If the deaf client has a doctor's appointment,

they may want to arrive 15 minutes early to meet with an interpreter.

The client has the right to request to see the interpreting license.

The licenses show that the interpreter is medically authorized.

The interpreter must show his or her license.

If the interpreter is not authorized,

Appointment:

the client has the right to make a decision

if they want to reschedule the appointment for another day

when an approved interpreter is available.

Or they can go ahead and keep the appointment.

But beware! There is a danger of bad communication if you continue.

It is important to know the law so that you can be independent!

HEARING PEOPLE:

Deaf, Deaf, and Deaf people have the right to access through active communication.

When a person tries to be independent but strives to gain access to communication,

they can contact the Deaf, Deaf Blind, or Hard of Hearing agency near their community.
